Carpinteria
Carpinteria was originally named after the Spanish word for “carpentry shop.” Naturally occurring surface tar found in the area, and which was perfect for sealing boats, enabled the Chumash Indian tribe – Carpenteria’s native inhabitants – to excel in canoe building. Today, Carpinteria is said to be “One of Southern California’s last old-fashioned beach towns.” The Carpinteria Valley Historical Museum focuses on the regions culturally rich history – which includes distinctive Chumash, Mexican Rancho and American Pioneer cultures. The Chumash Room is dedicated to the centuries-old lifestyle of the valley’s Native Americans. Throughout the museum, are Chumash artifacts, Mexican cattle rancho displays, Victorian home displays, country school displays, and agricultural displays.

The beautiful city of Santa Barbara is a close 15-minute drive for Carpinteria residents. Year-round sun illuminates the lovely and unique charm of the city, with its cobbled pathways, red tiled roofs and mission style adobes – all rooted in a rich Spanish heritage. Wonderful dining, shopping, arts and entertainment and historical attractions are available to visitors and locals in this relaxed, well-maintained and pristine beach town.
